For some reason it seems that the public immediately jump to the conclusion that gay means that the gay person in question likes children in a sexual manor.

A gay man or woman is no more likely to lust over children than a straight man or woman.

Whilst Dumbledore was straight in peoples eyes no one associated his wise grandfatherness as slimey with the girls at the school, now he is gay people are getting all weird about it!
