As you all know, Season 2 of Dollhouse is coming soon. The new season starts on September 25, 2009 at 9 pm (ET) with the episode “Vows” written by Joss Whedon.

Sorry for the so late post this week, but my laptop is now refusing to turn on and so my computer time has become limited. Therefore, any attempts I make at humor or even at making sense may not work out so well. Please keep in mind that it’s much harder for me to function very early in the morning or very late at night, which is all the screen time I’m getting lately.

So, I know I sound like a broken record of a rabid fan, but the Dollhouse season finale was really something else. Note that I’m calling this the season finale and not the series finale. I’m not yet ready to give up. I’m still waiting for the fat lady to sing and as far as I’m concerned, that hasn’t happened.

Just seeing the development of the show over the past few weeks, I know that Dollhouse has so much more to share. Alan Tudyk is like a god, like an acting god, the god of acting. It was amazing to watch him as he changed characters from one personality to another in seconds, and then back again.

There is still hope for Dollhouse. We may find something out even today, or at least by Monday. Plus, I’ve been reading reviews, something I’m always sorry I did after its too late to take back, and the general tone, although more hopeful, is still not of the best. But I’m still hanging with the optimists. In fact, as it turns out, according to a recent tweet I received from Buffyfest, I may be the new leader of the optimists in the Dollhouse Death Watch, since Michelle has apparently abandoned the cause. (If I could figure out how to paste that tweet in here, I would, but I can’t. )

I just wish they’d update the chart to show it!

Friday night on Dollhouse, less than 20 minutes into the episode “Briar Rose,” Paul Ballard (Tahmoh Penikett) turned a corner, knocked on a door, and suddenly, out of nowhere, the show went from amazing Whedoness to outstandingly incredible Whedoness. Because when that door opened, Alan Tudyk was on the other side and with his entrance, the show morphed into something spectacular with as yet unseen promise.

Look, I’m not gonna lie, I’ve been on board with Dollhouse all along and as the episodes have aired, I’ve fallen in love more and more. I want to know what’s going to happen here. I want the show to have a chance to play out. But now, I’m having this small sick feeling in the pit of my stomach that goes along with unrequited love. Why, you may ask, doesn’t Dollhouse love me back? Well, it may come to love me in time, but unfortunately, I’m more and more afraid that we’ll never get a chance to find out.

I’ve watched this last episode over a good many times in the last 40 hours. I’m more and more excited about what we are going to see next week. I’d be happier if I thought that huge ratings for the final ep would be enough to get a renewal. But even so, tell all your friends to watch Dollhouse next Friday. All of them. Cause you never know.

Some great lines from this ep:
-This feeling, it’s very much like pride.
-Carrots, medicinal carrots, personally used for medicinal, carrots that were here when I moved in and I’m holding it for a friend.
-Recycled urine? I’m kidding. It’s not fully recycled.
-I’m not comfortable having people in my home who aren’t delivering Thai food.

There are only two episodes of Dollhouse left. Maybe for ever and ever. (Unless you count the extra eps on the DVD, that is, the unused pilot and the most likely to remain unaired thirteenth ep.)

Which brings me to the point of this post. This week is Watch Dollhouse Week. You can go to that link and get all the info, but the bottom line here is that we should all re-watch the last five episodes of Dollhouse this week, starting tomorrow, Monday, April 27, and ending on Friday, May 1, right before the Friday’s ep of Dollhouse. You would actually start with episode 6, “Man on the Street.” However, if you want, you can start with the first episode, and watch two episodes, each day, Monday through Friday. (I grant you permission to skip “Stage Fright.” I didn’t hate it that much, but other people seem to.)

The point, of course, is to get as many people as possible to do the same thing, or to watch with you, to really bump up the numbers for the next two weeks. I’m not totally convinced that this will actually save Dollhouse, it might be too little too late, but at least it’s one last fun thing we can all do together. Believe me, I’m an optimist, I’d still like to believe that the show is going to be renewed for a second season. Really. If you don’t believe me, go check out the Dollhouse Death Watch at Buffyfest. I’ve been siding with the optimists since the beginning.

Sadly, there was no episode of Dollhouse on Friday, since they ran two eps of Prison Break. But it will be back this week on Friday and I can be patient.

In the meantime, I was thinking about how Whedonness has taken over the airwaves. This doesn’t just relate to shows that involve Joss Whedon, but for years now, whenever anyone involved in a Whedon show is on some other show, I have to point it out and get excited. And this doesn’t just mean the main characters, this has to do with each and every person who has ever guest starred in, or even randomly wandered through, a single ep of either Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel , Firefly or Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Now, that includes Dollhouse, too.

I thought it was only me, but just the other day, I happened to see a post over at Buffyfest showing that Spice Williams Crosby, who played a policewoman, a member of the Order of Taraka, on a couple of eps of BtVS back in Season 2, was also a random person in a chaotic prison scene in the last episode of Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles. So you see, we all do it. I also noticed both Kevin Christy (BtVS ep “Help”) and Eric Matheny (BtVS ep “Beer Bad”) on a recent Bones episode.

But let’s look at the landscape of television right now. Bones brings David Boreanaz (Angel) to our screens every week. Until last week, we had Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, with Summer Glau (River, Firefly and the Prima Balleria on “Waiting in the Wings,” Angel). We have Castle which stars Nathan Fillion (Mal, Firefly; Caleb, BtVS; and Captain Hammer on Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog). Kal Penn has been guest starring on House for the past two seasons, and he was on both BtVS (“Beer Bad”) and Angel (“That Vision Thing”). Adam Baldwin (Jayne, Firefly and Hamilton, Angel) now plays a character on Chuck.

Then there’s that new ABC show, The Unusuals, starring Amber Tamblyn (Janice on BtVS episode, “All The Way”) and Jeremy Renner (Penn on Angel ep, “Somnambulist”).

Even some of the Dollhouse characters are other characters from different Whedon shows. Eliza Dushku was, of course, Faith on both BtVS and Angel. Amy Acker, who plays Dr. Saunders was both Fred and Illyria on Angel. Mark Sheppard was Badger on Firefly and is Tanaka on Dollhouse.

This are literally all just sightings from the last couple of weeks. I’m sure there are a dozen more. Possibly even two dozen. So I’ll give you all a short assignment for this week. As you’re watching TV, think about who you’re seeing, and make sure you jump and point and squeal – just a little – when you see a member of the Whedonverse.

I wouldn’t trade places with Joss Whedon for anything in the world. Don’t get me wrong, I love Joss and I think he’s amazing and probably has a wonderful life. But here’s my problem. The guy gives his whole heart and soul to create an awesome hour of television, week after week after week. Yet he gets no love for this. Instead, people pick apart every tiny part of every little bit of every single episode.

Dollhouse is turning into something that’s great TV, but it’s cancellation is beginning to seem inevitable. Like a car sliding on the ice, you try to stop, you even think maybe you can stop, but no matter what you do, the car continues to spin out of your control until it finally makes impact. CRASH!! Sadly, I think that’s what’s happening here.

My husband has been calling me delusional, because I firmly believed that if I was watching the show live each week, somehow it just couldn’tbe cancelled. I’m still going to watch live. I’m still going to DVR the show each week so that I can watch it over a few times. (I actually have every episode still on my DVR and I don’t plan on erasing them any time soon.) I’m still going to tell everyone I know about Dollhouse and tell them to watch it. I’m still going to do my best to believe that Dollhouse will not only air the remaining five episodes, but that it will also come back to me for next season.

Maybe I am a little delusional.

I hate Whedon fans. No, really. I hate them. I can understand when naysayers start saying nay, cause it’s sort of in their job description, but when the actual fans, the people whose very name implies, or should imply, that they are fanatics, start yelling nay as well, I hate it.

I believe I’ve already explained that I’m one of the starry-eyed optimists when it comes to Dollhouse (you can see that here, on the Dollhouse Deathwatch at Buffyfest) and I’ve already gone indepth about my feelings as regards to the Dollhouse Uncertainty Principle (see my blog post here). So, my point? Well, I had this great post I was planning to write, all about how much I enjoyed last night’s ep of Dollhouse, how we were given so much more backstory on Echo as Caroline, how I never saw her as Faith, not even for a second, and lots of other good stuff. But then I was reading about the ratings drop for last night’s episode, “Echoes” at Whedonesque. And do you know what I saw? I saw all these random people, people who should be able to call themselves Whedon fans, and they were tearing the show apart and calling the time of death.

It is completely impossible to judge a show by a few random episodes. Let me give you an example:

A show premiered to low ratings. After it aired, NBC did not pick it up and actually offered the show to Fox, which also declined to pick it up. However, head of late night and special events for NBC, diverted money from his budget, and four more episodes were filmed. These episodes were placed in a time slot where they followed the number 3 rated show on TV at that time. The series was then finally picked up. The series was renamed and placed in several time slots during its second season, before finally finding a regular time slot. It was not until the show’s fourth season that it finally broke into the Nielsen Top 30, shooting up to number 3 for its 5th year, and number 1 for it’s sixth year. Years 7 and 8 it landed at number 2, and then back to number 1 for it’s final season.

If we were to have judged that show the way people are now judging Dollhouse after just a few episodes, we would have lost out on nine great years of Seinfeld. I know people are gonna start jumping on me, saying that Dollhouse is not Seinfeld. But how do we know what Dollhouse is going to be, if we kill it off after just a few episodes.

How do I love thee, Joss Whedon? Let me count the ways.

Episode 6 of Dollhouse, “Man on the Street” was just awesome. It completely lived up to all the hype, as I had hoped it would. What’s more, it’s not just me saying that. Not only were the ratings up, the reviews are great, as they should be.

First of all, you can tell that his episode is one that Joss had complete control over. This is the episode that should be have the premiere. This is the episode where the network execs finally backed off and let the show be exactly what it should be. It was all the things we’ve come to expect from Joss on his game, playful, with just the right dialogue, but also serious and fast-paced with an awesome fight scene and lots of plot twistiness. Plus, it makes you feel like you’ve jumped right into the middle of something big. You can pretty much feel the mythology wrap around you and you understand that there is an entire world here, that everyone and everything has a backstory, but we just don’t know it all. Yet.

The best part of all this, for me, was that my husband finally agreed to sit and watch Dollhouse. I was so glad it was this episode, because even he had to admit that the show is lovely indeed. On my second watch through (or was it my third), he was in the other room, but kept commenting, “That music is just perfect for this scene” or “It’s the fight, right? She just hit the car?” Even I can’t tell you how he knew that.

It’s not just me. I know it now. The fifth ep of Dollhouse , “True Believer,” was really, really good. I’m backed up in this by the ratings, which went back up. Up is almost always good.

I’ve been wandering aimlessly around reading other people’s reviews, which is not something I would recommend, because people are often stupid and critical. But still, the feeling around town seems to be more hopeful that it was previously. This is also a good.

One thing of the things I noticed when reading reviews is all this hating on Topher, played happily by Fran Kranz. I don’t get it, cause I love Topher. Sure, he’s amoral and often glib and careless of others, but he’s fun. Amoral people often are for some reason. These reviewers keep trying to make Topher into Xander, just cause he provides some much needed comic relief, but Topher is the opposite of Xander. Xander was the heart and often the conscience of the Scoobies, he cared about everyone. Topher doesn’t care about anything or anyone but himself. But he’s so much fun. I like fun, so I vote for more Topher.

Next week is the famous episode six we’ve heard so much about, entitled “Man on The Street.” This is the one where Joss Whedon takes over and makes us know why he’s our Master. Or at least that’s the theory and I hope it proves true. Strike that, I believe it will prove true. Joss has never let me down yet.
